March 27, 2023
NYC trip was from March 4th till the 28th. I stayed at the fantastic Dream Midtown hotel and highly recommend it. Allen and I stayed there in November and didn’t love it but the location is fantastic and the service was impeccable and much improved on this visit. Walked 278,000 steps (139 miles!!), LYFTS, taxis, and figured out the subway. Took the train to New Jersey for a day. Had 3 very fun visitors throughout the visit (Marc Magen, Scott Cessac, Craig Parsons). Saw long time friends Jon and Regan Kasman, Jesika, Robin Michelson Kushner, Daniel Kushner, Samuel G Friedman, and met up with new friends Amy Jensen, Martin Maruschak and Katherine Price. Saw 16 shows: Titanique, Phantom of the Opera, Bad Cinderella, A Beautiful Noise, Kimberly Akimbo, Broadway Backwards, Wicked, Some Like It Hot, Funny Girl, Hercules (in Millburn, NJ at Paper Mill theater), Harry Potter (twice!), Fat Ham, Shucked, New York New York, and Chicago. Saw a fantastic NY Rangers hockey game. Went to the “Golden Girls” pop up. Went to 10 museums: Tenement, Science & History, Historical Society, Broadway, MOMA, Guggenheim, Whitney, Dog, Met Cloisters, Fotografiska. Went to NY Public Library (2) and multiple trips to: Central Park, Bryant Park, Union Square, Soho, Chelsea, Brooklyn (and Dumbo), Williamsburg, lower east side, upper west side, Chinatown, Greenwich Village, West Village. Many trips to Rockefeller Center (one of my fav places) and one trip to the Top of the Rock. Was an audience member at The View and The Daily Show. Attended “Sondheim Remembered” cabaret at 54 Below. Took two free walking tours (Midtown and Ghosts of Broadway). Walked the HiLine and went to a beautiful Starbucks Roastery. Went to The Stonewall and Grand Central Terminal. Took a croissant making class at a Greenwich Village bakery. Ate steak at Gallaghers, and ate and drank at Sardi’s (my fav!) and Joe Allen’s. Ate my weight (seriously) in knishes, bagels, croissants, sandwiches, pizza, pasta and anything else called a carb (including lots of Juniors’ cheesecake) at many diners and cafes and amazing delis (Zabar’s - def one of my faves). Drank my weight in iced lattes, hot coffees, teas, seltzer, enough water to fill a lake, and egg creams. Finally went to Serendipity for a frozen hot chocolate. Bought Reggie bars (just Google it) from the only place in the city you can get them….Economy Candy. Only saw one dead rat - lucky! (No I am not scarred. Yes I know I’m in NY.) Saw one celebrity (that I know of) that was not planned (Stephen Colbert). Told every single dog that I met that I loved them. Fantastic trip. Would do it again in a heartbeat. No regrets. (No “should have done this or that.” I packed it all in, and I loved it.) I am not a NYer nor do I act like I am, but I love NY and my Mom was from Brooklyn so I started young. My method is part tourist stuff to do, part things that locals enjoy, and part random finds. if you ever need a rec or suggestion, feel free to ask. Thanks for coming with me on this trip!
